Kin I and Kin II

It’s here, and it’s finally official. Microsoft recently announced two Windows Phone devices called Kin I and Kin II, the outcome of the highly rumored Microsoft Project Pink.

They both feature Windows Phone OS, but differ in hardware specs. Kin II it’s the biggest, featuring 8Gb memory, 8Mp camera that records 720p video, while KIN I has a smaller form factor and features a 5Mp camera with full VGA Video. It’s been said that battery life will last an entire weekend. But this is still subject of testing, you know how marketing works, right?

The new OS is very much social oriented. It’s main screen, called Loop shows all your contacts strictly organized and somewhat optimized from a User Experience point of view. Personally, It won’t do much to me, since I use my personal devices in a more professional level, but it’s great for social usage scenarios.

Other than this, it seems sharp will be the device manufacturer for the 1st round, and both devices will be available in

Vodafone Spain, Italy, Germany and Uk.

Microsoft cuts 800 more jobs

0

Microsoft recently announced that it’s making additional job cuts today. A total of 800 job positions will be cut around the world, and affecting several product groups. It has been said that about a quarter of the job cuts are in the Seattle region.

With these cuts, Microsoft says it has now completed its plan, announced in January, to eliminate 5,000 positions over 18 months. The latest cuts also go a step further, taking the cumulative number of layoffs beyond the original 5,000-position plan, spokesman Lou Gellos confirmed, without saying how much further they go.

Hang in there guys…

Microsoft buys portuguese company MobiComp

0

As you may already have heard, Microsoft recently bought a Portuguese company called MobiComp, with headquarters in Braga, near Oporto. This is a smart move by MS, in which, by acquiring an open-source computing company that specializes in storage, backup and restoration of mobile data, MS will certainly get an important mobile development and knowledge unit.

No financial terms were released, nor did MS provide details on MobiComp’s role at Microsoft, although Reuters reported Redmond plans to use the company as a research and development unit. Todd Peters, corporate vice president in the Mobile Communications Business at Microsoft, said that he believes that the addition of MobiComp will “extend the capabilities of Windows Mobile and Windows Live to help us provide the most innovative and seamless way to stay connected.”

Carlos Oliveira, co-founder and CEO of MobiComp, said his eight-year-old company believes in an “open and innovative mobile platform and deep industry partnerships.”

Yahoo says ‘No’ to Microsoft and welcomes Google instead

0

Yahoo announced that it has ended its meetings with Microsoft in favour of a search-related deal as well as the sale of the entire company. Yahoo is expected to move forward with an advertising pact with Google.

According to Yahoo’s press release, issued Thursday afternoon:

Yahoo!’s Board of Directors has determined, after careful evaluation, that such a transaction would not be consistent with the company’s view of the converging search and display marketplaces, would leave the company without an independent search business that it views as critical to its strategic future and would not be in the best interests of Yahoo! stockholders.

Needless to say that Yahoo’s shares are responding quite well to these events :)
