Microsoft released today the .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 GDR (General Distribution Release). This release addresses some issues and should only be installed if you have some kind of issue. Otherwise, it is not recommended to do so. You better wait.
In case you don't know what a GDR is, here's a quick explanation:
A GDR addresses an issue that has a broad customer impact, that has security implications, or that has both. It is determined and issued by Microsoft as appropriate and when appropriate. GDRs are kept to a minimum and cannot be requested by a customer. Microsoft internally determines whether a...
The second day of PDC was all about Windows 7. Apparently someone, in it's infinite distraction, allowed the name "Windows Strata" to show up on the official Professional Developers Conference 2008 web site. Rumours say it might be the name of the new "Windows Cloud".
I'll make sure to end this gossip when I arrive in L.A. for the PDC 2008 event :)
According to Steven Sinofsky, senior vice-president of the Windows and Windows Live Engineering Group, there will be no roles on Windows 7. With Windows Server 2008 role usage, we've all assumed roles not to be discontinued, but according to Steven, "We’ve seen scenario or role-based setup as a very popular feature for Windows Server 2008. In the server environment, however, each of these roles represents a different piece of hardware (likely with different configurations) or perhaps a specific VM on a very beefy machine, and also represent very clearly understood "workloads" (file server, print server, web server).
The desktop PC...
Just posted an article on Speech Synthesis and Speech Recognition using the .NET Framework.
Folowing the release of Hyper-V’s last week, Microsoft announced today the release of Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit 3.1 (MAP) on the web frontend, also formerly known as Windows Vista Hardware Assessment.
For those of you that don't know it, the Microsoft Assessment and Planning Toolkit 3.1 is a network-wide agent-less tool to help quickly identify the locations of desktops and servers as well as auto-generate upgrade recommendations for multiple products and technologies including server, desktop and virtualization migration scenarios. "...is a tool that makes it easy for you to assess your current IT infrastructure for a variety of technology migration...
The drama.... The horror.... Yes... It's finally here. The D day. Or shall I say, XP Day. The day to the forced retirement of Microsoft's Windows XP is set for Monday but Microsoft has agreed to offer Windows XP updates and security patches until April 2014.
However, PC retailers such as Dell have pretty much stopped selling computers preloaded with the venerable OS. XP's disappearance has stirred much conversation. In fact, more than 200,000 people signed a petition to keep XP -- a campaign championed by our sibling publication InfoWorld. In the long run, though, Microsoft refused to yield to...
